Such a nice stallion and such a nice time of day. We found Hercules and his family in late afternoon in the Barcus area. All was peaceful. Perfect way to end our day in the horse range. (Piceance-East Douglas HMA in Colorado).

Winter Visit – 2/2019
March 2, 2019
It was the end of the day and we were on a road that we don’t normally take out, when we came across this band. Since the forecast for the next day was so bleak (rain, snow and plenty of wind, which resulted in an abbreviated trip for us), we took our time leaving the area and enjoyed watching these horses figure out the best way to handle our presence. (Piceance-East Douglas HMA, CO)
These horses were across the road from the rest of the band and started to group together. I stayed in one spot since I don’t like to see horses burn calories with a lot of movement in the winter (these guys look good!). I hoped they wouldn’t feel the need to run.
Possibly a lieutenant stallion?
They did move off a little, but didn’t go too far, too fast.
I think this is the band stallion. The gray is a mare.
He’s a big boy. Appearing confident, he just kept an eye on me without wasting much energy.
You can’t see me. I’ve become one with the stallion. Look how their manes appear to blend into the other. He protects her. 🙂
The rest of the band crosses the road to join the big stallion and mare.
A little posturing between the boys in the band. 🙂
We left about 10 minutes into our visit. It’s always my goal to leave before the horses feel the need to. Doesn’t always work out that way, but it is what I strive for. In my head, I hope the horses will remember that the last time they saw me, I posed no threat – and that they’ll let me linger a while when next we meet. 🙂

Quick Winter Visit
April 8, 2018
Tom and I made a very quick, 1/2 day visit to Piceance in early March. There wasn’t much snow, but the roads were still very wet and muddy. We were unable to venture into many areas, so consequently, saw few horses. But, we were treated to these and they all looked to be in good condition. Always a welcome sight coming out of winter.

Photo Of The Week-10/21/2017
October 21, 2017
While quietly watching one of my favorite horses, we heard running hooves (an amazing sound) and then from our right, we saw a family band come charging out of the trees in front of us. They’re quite a ways off, but what a sight! Running for the sheer joy of it. (Piceance-East Douglas HMA, CO)

Photo Of The Week – 10/8/17
October 8, 2017
This stocky bay roan stallion has a new family member. At least, I’ve not seen her with him before. She is the mare standing next to him in the photo. He was protective of his little band and they didn’t stick around long. This is the way I like to see them. Still wary. Stay safe with your little family JR. (Piceance-East Douglas HMA, CO)
