Photo Of The Week – 2/12/17

Peeking through an opening in the thick brush and trees, a young Piceance-East Douglas filly steals a look at me as I try to get close enough to identify the band. She only stopped for a second and then she was gone. It’s a rush to hear thundering hooves through the trees, only catching a glimpse or two of the actual horses. They can disappear so quickly. I so love their wild nature. 🙂

It’s a good thing I have an affinity for the gray horses. There are a lot of them in the Piceance-East Douglas HMA. I usually find this guy on my way to the Cathedral Bluffs area of the range. He’s always alert – always aloof. I never tire of the wildness of these horses.

“Hercules” from the Piceance-East Douglas HMA in Colorado. He and his band don’t usually run from us, but this was taken during hunting season, so maybe that had something to do with his quick exit. He and his family were up a canyon in less than a minute. I stayed put when they decided to take off. I don’t like to see calories burned during the winter season. It can be a tough time of year for foraging.

Handsome – Winter, 2016

He “floats” down a hillside in front of me. As most of you know, this is my favorite stallion on the Piceance-East Douglas horse range. I’ve been following him since 2006 (first Handsome photo). We searched for days for this boy at the end of December. I didn’t want to leave until I had gotten a chance to see how he was doing. On the last day, with only a couple of hours of left before we had to head out, there he was. Finally. He was alone, but he looked good. Of course I wish he’d hook up with some other bachelor stallions, but maybe he will at some point. Earlier in the year, he had a foal with him briefly (that story here). Then we spotted him at the end of October hanging out near a band of 11 and playing with one of its junior members. At least we know he gets social once in a while. 😉
