Photo of the Week – 4/4/21

This is the stallion that started my love for the Piceance-East Douglas HMA in Colorado. The first horse I saw in 2006 and my favorite. Handsome is between 20-22 years old now and showing his age a little with his puffy knees, chronic limp and scars from years of sparring. He was a wonderful band stallion who never warmed up to my presence which is what I so admired about him – his devotion to his family. He’s never really given up trying to reclaim a family and managed to steal and keep a small family band just two years ago. I’ve learned to never count this guy out. I love this old warrior. Handsome was hanging out with another stallion when this photo was taken in June, 2020 and since we only made it to the horse range a few times last year as flying day trips due to Covid, it was amazing that we managed to see him at all. He can be very elusive. We hope to see you this spring Handsome.

Protecting the baby. This mare and foal became separated from their stallion briefly and as he was figuring out a way around an obstacle, this beautiful mare kept close to the youngster and safe from harm (us – the perceived threat). The family was reunited in no time and all was well. 🙂 (Piceance-East Douglas HMA, CO)

Barcus area stallions. The bay on the right is Shiraz. I know I say this a lot, but he’s one of my favorites out there. 😉 I hadn’t seen him in a couple of years, so this was a wonderful and overdue sighting. His gray buddy is quite a looker as well. (Piceance-East Douglas HMA, CO.)

Wild Horses Overhead :)

The band stallion is the gray (almost white) guy on the far right (known as Seven).

I’ve been spotted!

This mare is known as Honey.

This little one is getting angry, pinned ears from a mare that is not his mother.

Hurrying towards mom.

Last year’s foals. The perlino has blue eyes and the sun makes her squint.

The little bay foal on the far right does belong to “angry ears.” 😉

The band is being followed by a gray, bachelor stallion.

Coming down from the ridge.

And into a small meadow where we left them to graze. A cute parting glance from the youngest member of the band. 🙂
