Piceance Bachelor Boys
April 6, 2019
I try very hard not to sneak up on horses, but these two bachelor boys were so intent on eating, that they barely noticed my approach. When they did, they were a bit startled and briefly bolted.
Look at the flexion in his body as he scrambles away.
They didn’t go far and since I didn’t make a move to close the distance between us, they became more curious about me.
I love the frosting in his mane.
It was nice to spend some time with these two and I left while they were still relatively comfortable with me.
Another sweet encounter with the wild ones. 🙂

An alert trio of bachelor stallions from the Piceance Creek/East Douglas HMA in Colorado. “Kindall” in the middle is one of the spookiest horses on this range. No matter how many times he sees me, he is the first to high-tail it out of the area.

These two boys are standing so close together and their coloring matches so closely, they almost seem to meld together. Adobe Town HMA (Wyoming) bachelor stallions. (September, 2010).

Divide Basin Bachelors
January 22, 2011
It seemed like we were driving forever before we finally spotted some horses. I got out of the Jeep and peered through my lens. Looked like a group of bachelor stallions. What a sight they were against the mountains in all their wildness.
I walked towards them. As with most bachelor bands I’ve run across, they’re the most curious and these guys were no exception. They started towards me as well.
The big bay is trying to catch my scent.

I admit it - I have a thing for the palominos. This boy just shimmered in the sunlight. What a gorgeous animal.

As I was admiring the boys, something spooked them. Look at those quick, cutting horse moves to get out of harm's way. Amazing.
Before I made them too uncomfortable, I decided to back away and leave them alone. As soon as I did, they quit moving and stood for this parting photo.
Always such a privilege to spend time with the wild ones…

Though we had trouble finding horses in this area (only 4 bands after a full day of searching), there is a roundup scheduled for this herd management area next year:
