Photo of the Week – 4/4/21

April 4, 2021

This is the stallion that started my love for the Piceance-East Douglas HMA in Colorado. The first horse I saw in 2006 and my favorite. Handsome is between 20-22 years old now and showing his age a little with his puffy knees, chronic limp and scars from years of sparring. He was a wonderful band stallion who never warmed up to my presence which is what I so admired about him – his devotion to his family. He’s never really given up trying to reclaim a family and managed to steal and keep a small family band just two years ago. I’ve learned to never count this guy out. I love this old warrior. Handsome was hanging out with another stallion when this photo was taken in June, 2020 and since we only made it to the horse range a few times last year as flying day trips due to Covid, it was amazing that we managed to see him at all. He can be very elusive. We hope to see you this spring Handsome.

Wow, he looks great ! We’ve been out lately, mostly in Pintado Canyon, and have seen a few dark bays on the West Douglas side. Where would we go to get a glimpse of him ?

Hi Maggie – yes, it is great to see that he’s still out there. I hope he always will be.

Hello LM – Handsome tends to hang out in the 84 Mesa area, Water Gulch or the “pasture.” If you spot him, please let me know. Or, send me a photo of a horse you spot and think might be him. I’d appreciate it. Always good to know when he’s been seen. Thanks

Isn’t it amazing how these animals can breed and be so perfect without mans interference!? And yeah, I sure understand Handsome’s achy knees…I suffer achy knees too! Granted his life physically is more brutal than mine but I can appreciate his owies.

Hi Margaret. Yes, the wild ones do pretty darn well. Oh, and I too can appreciate the owie knees. 😉 Hope you’re doing well.
