A group of Salt Wells wild horses take off over a rise (Wyoming). These are some of the beautiful horses in danger of being permanently removed from their rangeland homes. This is Bolder’s band (last year) from the Pryor Mountains of Montana enjoying the early morning. It’s not a particularly beautiful image, but it “feels” peaceful to me.
From The Cloud Foundation, The BLM Billings Field Office mailed a Scoping Letter to interested parties on July 28th, stating their intent to reach an “Appropriate” Management Level (AML) of 90-120 adult wild horses, one year of age and older in the Pryor Mountains. If they carry out this plan 45 to as many as 75 horses would be removed in 2012. Please write a factual letter to the BLM using some of the information at the following link: Pryor Facts for Scoping Input 2011. Letters need to be postmarked to the BLM by August 30th. No e-mails will be accepted. Letters can be addressed to:

Sand Wash Basin HMA near Craig, Colorado. The wild horses are the jewels in our western landscapes…
Please help our wild ones – oppose the precedent-setting decision for the Little Colorado and White Mountain HMAs to geld all stallions and make this Mustang population “non-reproducing.” Click on the link below to learn more and act: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/6931/t/0/blastContent.jsp?email_blast_KEY=1168526
Thank you!

Wild Horse Shirt Design
May 22, 2011
At the suggestion of many folks and facilitated by several rainy days, I’ve designed what I hope is a thought-provoking image to help promote awareness of the wild horse situation. Now available on t-shirts and sweatshirts through my website: Pam Nickoles Photography
Donations will benefit the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (a coalition of many organizations I support) and The Cloud Foundation. I will also make the shirts available to other deserving foundations, rescues, sanctuaries, etc. as part of their fundraising efforts. Full details are listed in the product descriptions on my website. Shipping is available worldwide.
To those of you that order shirts, I’d love to see photos of you wearing them. Please feel free to share your images by e-mailing them to me at: info@NickolesPhotography.com
I may feature them on my website, Facebook page or on this Blog, so be sure you grant permission to do so when you e-mail. Let’s make this more interesting – I’ll feature a Blog post with photos I receive along with any stories of conversations initiated or questions asked, etc. while wearing your shirt. It’s intended purpose. Anything you’d like to share, I’d love to hear.
For our wild horses…
In white. (The copyright will not be printed on the actual shirt)
In black. (The copyright will not be printed on the actual shirt)
I will be adding more designs, eventually creating a collection to choose from.

Great Divide Basin Wyoming Planned Removal
May 21, 2011
Please send in your comments before June, 20, 2011
From the BLM website:
The Bureau of Land Management Rock Springs Field Office launches a 30-day public comment period on an Environmental Assessment to gather excess wild horses from the Great Divide Basin Herd Management Area (HMA).
After the current foaling season, the population estimate will be nearly 1,700 wild horses roaming the Great Divide Basin HMA. The Great Divide Basin Appropriate Management Level (AML) is between 415-600 wild horses. AML is the point at which the herd’s population is consistent with the land’s capacity to support wild horses in balance with other public rangeland uses and resources. The gather is necessary to maintain the wild horse herds within the established AMLs in compliance with the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act and the 2003 Wyoming Consent Decree. The AML for the Great Divide Basin was established through an agreement with private land owners and wild horse advocacy groups, and confirmed in the 1997 Green River Resource Management Plan. The proposed gather is anticipated to begin Fall 2011 to remove approximately 1,225 excess wild horses, may include using fertility control, as well as adjusting sex ratios. The Great Divide Basin HMA was last gathered August 2007. More information is available online at: http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/documents/rsfo/divide_basin.html.
Public comments are most helpful if they cite specific actions or impacts, and offer supporting information. Comments are requested by June 20, and can be mailed, hand-delivered during regular business hours (7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), or emailed only to the following address:
