“Heartland”

Some of you already know that we recently completed a 16-day adventure through Montana, Canada, Idaho and Wyoming. I will be sharing some of that incredible journey with you later. Just for fun, I thought I’d share part of the reason all of us (me, Tom, my Mom and Tom’s Dad) became even more interested in exploring Canada. All of us except Tom, had been there before and had wanted to go back, but watching a particular series on TV prompted us to go sooner, rather than later.

We were to pick my Mom up at the Calgary airport about 5 days into our trip. High River (where some of the show is filmed) was on the way. Once there, we checked out the Chamber of Commerce and got exact directions to one of the sets and a general idea about where the ranch was located. They won’t tell you where it is. It’s private property.

We rolled through on June 15th. The Street Party would have been fun to attend had we been just one day later.
We left High River and drove on. We knew what town we were looking for, but we had no idea past that bit of information. Almost like we were guided, we turned off the main highway and I talked Tom into asking someone in a local gas station/market if they knew where the ranch was. Well, Tom came out with less than specific directions, but after hitting a dead end and going back the other way, we noticed pastures full of equipment trailers, vehicles and props. Hmmm…think we’re on the right track.
Sure enough, we hit pay dirt at the other end of the road just past all the equipment. The location was monitored of course and as we drove up, a guard walked up to the Jeep. He was very friendly and when we asked permission to photograph, he called down and I was given the okay. We were actually told that if they’d had an extra person (they didn’t) and they weren’t currently filming a scene (they were), they would have escorted us down to meet and greet. Oh well. We agreed it was fun just to be there. Wish Mom had been with us.
We were told that the owner of the ranch makes the film company take the sign down and change the mailbox (it’s a prop with the Bartlett name) when they’re not filming. Makes sense.
You can see a couple of the guys from the film crew with a large, rolling camera. While we were there, they were filming a scene inside the barn for the first episode of Season 6. I believe they are showing Season 2 or 3 in Colorado. I bought the DVD’s for Seasons 1-4 and they made the rounds. From us, to my aunt and uncle in Wyoming, to my Mom, to Nick on the Western Slope and back. We’re waiting for the Season 5 DVD to become available in the U.S. and we’ll pick that up as well.
This show takes on such topics as wild horses (the Canadian variety, but they even mentioned our Mustang prison training program here in Canon City, CO in one episode), horse rescue, natural horsemanship, slaughter, complementary Veterinary techniques (traditional, herbal/holistic) and more. I wish there was a program like it in the United States. It’s just an all around good show. Reminds me of those nights when we’d gather around the TV to watch the “Wonderful World of Color” and “Bonanza” each Sunday night. There was something good to watch that we looked forward to each week. Now, it’s Saturday night on Denver’s 20-1 TV station – 2 hours of “Heartland.” Hey, that’s tonight!
